Mission Statement: (See Web Site For Updated Information)
Hunger Project is dedicated to fighting poverty by combining direct service, advocacy, and education. It provides services to homeless and low-income individuals in helping to meet their immediate and long-term needs. Volunteers deliver food, serve meals, provide job assistance, volunteer at the Los Angeles Mission Community Clinic that serve mainly the homeless, and deliver donated clothing and furniture. Founded in 1987, Hunger Project was the first UCLA student organization focused on aiding the homeless population, and to this day, it is run by dedicated UCLA student volunteers. Our goal is to fight homelessness and hunger by helping homeless individuals meet their immediate and long-term needs while educating the campus community about our efforts in hope that more people will take action. The purpose for going to a site is not only to improve our community but also to educate volunteers about poverty through first-hand experience. Reaching out to the community means actively going out into the scene. Thus, we have divided Hunger Project into five subprograms that go out on a weekly basis: Food Salvage, Job Development, Health Education, St. Anne's, and Community of Friends.
